THE PROGRAM
Gambling addiction is a recognized mental health disorder that can be treated. Current research has produced exciting advances in our understanding of the disease. Our state-of-the-art treatment program is based on the most current research models and continues to evolve. Of course, as is the case with any addiction, recovery requires hard work and dedication, both by our staff and the individual. The Problem Gambling Center’s treatment plan begins with an evaluation by one of our certified gambling addiction counselors, followed by a six-week "intensive outpatient program" (IOP), and one year of "aftercare".
The Problem Gambling Center’s intensive outpatient program incorporates three interrelated components in a group setting. Education is the first component. During these sessions, a mental health professional presents the group with the most recent scientific knowledge available in order to better understand and combat the disorder. In particular, advances in medical, genetic, and societal research are emphasized. The second component, counseling, is led by nationally and/or state certified counselors. They teach the group to take responsibility for their actions and to organize their lives in a responsible manner. It also focuses on practical strategies to avoid succumbing to urges to gamble. The final component emphasizes cognitive-behavioral therapy which focuses on changing thoughts and behavior. Problem gamblers are taught, not only about an alternative way of behaving, but also an approach to changing the thought processes which contributed to their addiction.
Many problem gamblers, especially video poker players, gamble as a way of "zoning out" from life and other people. They are most comfortable in their aloneness. These people occasionally are resistant to the group setting in which successful treatment is achieved. Research has shown, though, that group support is essential for successful recovery. The people that overcome their objections to the group dynamics are often the most successful in achieving recovery from gambling addiction.
